Title: Plato and Diderot: the critique of the artist

Summary: The aim of this work is, as the text itself indicates, present the criticism of the artist taken by Plato and Diderot. In spite of his criticism to poetry brandish Plato in the Republic within an ethical-political context; and Diderot, in turn, in the paradox about the Comedian, in a record, there is a similar positioning of the two philosophers concerning the theme. Among many similar points observed among them, focus our attention on two of them that seemed to us to these criticisms: fundamental notions of pathos and ideal. Both Plato and Diderot noted that the figure of the artist is always thought about with these notions. Although, at first glance, we are tempted to conclude that, in this relationship, the ideal is an antipode of passions, more closely, these oscillate: now appear as an obstacle, as a positive reference in their criticism; the key to appease this conflict will be the Temperance (sophrosýne). Given this, we propose, with this work, investigate and clarify that changing relationship which is analogous in these philosophers.
